San Antonio to Host Tow Expo Int'l May 12-14, 2011

September 24, 2010 - San Antonio, the city popular for its historic Alamo and unique River Walk, will once again play host to Tow Expo International 2011, according to Henri "Doc" Calitri, president of A.T. Expo, Inc.

The show will be housed in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center from May 12-14. San Antonio was the show site from 2006-2008 before the show moved to Houston the last two years.

"We are very excited to go back to San Antonio," said Tommy Anderson, show manager. "The exhibitors we surveyed were overwhelmingly in favor of bringing the show back to San Antonio. It has proven to be very popular for both vendors and attendees."

"The River Walk is literally outside the door of our host hotel Marriott River Walk ($159/night) and within two blocks of the La Quinta ($129/night), our second choice hotel. The convention center is a stop on the River Walk and across the street from the Marriott. Anyone can enjoy the flavor of the city and its attractions within a few minutes of leaving their hotel room," Anderson added. "You can pick from dozens of restaurants along the River Walk promenade and have a great time."

Tow truck operator killed in hit-and-run crash on I-5
SEATTLE -- State troopers arrested a man who they say struck and killed a tow truck driver on Interstate 5 in Seattle early Friday morning.

Officials said the 51-year-old tow truck driver was on the ramp from Spokane Street to southbound I-5 working on a vehicle damaged in an earlier crash when he was hit about 1:15 a.m.

William Padilla, who worked for GT Towing in Seattle, was kneeling down at the front of the disabled car when a man driving an SUV in the HOV lane lost control and drove across all southbound lanes before hitting the tow truck operator.

"We had DOT at the scene doing traffic control... so it was a pretty safe scene," Washington State Patrol Trooper Trisena John said.

"But, still, this person for some reason cut across all lanes and ended up hitting this tow truck driver even though there was plenty of traffic control and plenty of lights to notify approaching traffic that there was a collision scene ahead."

Padilla, of Burien, died at the scene.

Investigators said the man driving the SUV sped off but was captured minutes later at the bottom of the Michigan Street off ramp.

He and another man who was in the car at the time of the crash were arrested and booked into the King County Jail. Officials said both men were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

San Bernardino City Council
Delays Decision on City Owned Storage Facilty

August 24, 2010 - SAN BERNARDINO SUN - The City Council delayed a controversial plan to let the Police Department manage an impound yard, but a night meeting in a crowded and hot boardroom did not produce a decision on budget cutting as of Monday's deadline.

"REACT" Today To Ensure CTTA Can "REACT" Tomorrow!

Over 40 years ago a group of towers united to provide a means for united efforts in the solution of problems, and to administer such action as might be deemed necessary to benefit the individual, to communicate with government agencies on a state and local basis, and to provide a concerted effort toward giving the industry a better public image and the professional status it deserves. Thus, the California Tow Truck Association (CTTA) was created.

CTTA's Board of Directors unanimously voted to launch a grassroots effort and create a "REACT" team to collectively work with towers to support and combat cities and counties competing in what has been considered private sector business.

Don't make the mistake of waiting until you are faced with your city and/or governmental agency competing with private sector businesses by establishing a governmental owned and operated towing and/or storage facility in their effort to offset their budget deficit.

Click Here To Read How You Can "REACT" Today

A Proactive Approach to Stay Informed

Below are some steps to follow to assist you to understand, not be blindsided and to participate in the process that your city may be going through when they evaluate the possibility of your city going into the City Owned & Operated Storage Facility.

  • City Website – Find out the web address for your city. Bookmark the web page and visit the site regularly to view City Council agenda, staff proposals, staff reports and upcoming events or news from your city.
  • Network – Find out who your City Council Members are and start attending functions to get to know them better. Study all of the councilmember's platforms and see if any one may be "sensitive" to your concerns.
  • Review City Calendar - Most cities will post the dates for their upcoming City Council Meetings or other events on their website or in the lobby at City Hall.
  • Attend City Council Meetings – Start attending as many City Council Meetings as you can. Do not just attend a meeting that has an agenda item that might affect you or your business.
  • Attend Community Interest Meetings – Attend and participate in meeting of community interest. Your participation enriches your community. It is also an easy way to meet your neighbors and give back to the community that supports your business.
  • Participate in Community Activities – Most communities have local festivals and service groups such as the Salvation Army, Rotary, or Kiwanis. Most if not all the members of these organizations own a business within the city as well. Locate one of these groups and join their organization.
  • Serve on a Board or Commission – If you are a resident in the City, you can apply to participate on an advisory board to the City Council. Contact your city to find out which Board or Commission is available in your city and what steps you need to take to apply to volunteer.
  • Review Agenda Items in Advance – Most cities will provide an agenda several days prior to the scheduled meeting of items that will be discussed, reviewed, or voted upon.
  • Review Minutes from Meetings – Minutes from City Council meetings should be available shortly after each meeting. Take the time to read the minutes especially if you were not able to attend the meeting.
  • Notify CTTA - If you hear or receive notification that your city is considering going into the City Owned & Operated Storage Facility business or any other issues that could jeopardize your future as a financially viable, successful towing company owner.
